Initial Teacher Certification / Alternative Routes (Graduate Level)
Effective fall 2007, students must pass all appropriate state exams and apply for appropriate state certifications with the State Board for Educator Certification / Texas Education Agency within six months of the completion of their residency / practicum / program. If a student allows the six month period to go by without passing all state exams and applying for certification, additional coursework and/or state exams will be required for recommendation for certification. Additional coursework will be determined by the appropriate Program Director in consultation with the faculty.
An alternative route to initial teacher certification is offered only at the graduate level for students who have earned a bachelor's degree. Students must be admitted to the UTA Graduate School and be admitted to Teacher Certification in the College of Education. Students who are considering initial teacher certification are strongly encouraged to incorporate the certification courses into the Master's degree (M.Ed.T.- Master's of Education in Teaching).
Initial teacher certification is available for the following levels:
Early Childhood – Grade 4 (EC - 4)
Middle Level Certification (Grades 4 - 8)
Secondary Certification (Grades 8 - 12)
All Level Certification (EC - 12)
A person seeking to earn Texas Teacher Certification in either Middle Level or Secondary must select a content area (mathematics, science, English Language Arts & Reading). Those seeking All Level Certification must have a content area in Music, Art or Physical Education. Please see a content advisor for information regarding the content area requirements.
