In September 2000, the Center for Bilingual and ESL Education at the University of Texas at Arlington was founded. The Center was established in response to the large number of English language learners in Texas and the need for effective language programs to address their needs. The Center has three main goals:
- To increase the number of qualified bilingual and ESL teachers in Texas.
- To provide technical support to school districts in the areas of bilingual and ESL education;
- To provide training to pre-service and in-service teachers in the areas of cross-cultural communication and effective teaching practices for language minority students.
