New Grants for Math and Science Education

The College of Education and Health Professions and Health Professions (COEHP) and the College of Science at UT Arlington have been awarded a $350,000 extension to their Math, Science and Technology Teacher Preparation Academy grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). Dr. Ann Cavallo Professor of Science Education and Associate Dean for Teacher and Professional Education in COEHP, and Dr. Greg Hale, Assistant Dean for Science Education in the College of Science, were originally awarded $350,000 under this program in October 2008. The funding primarily provides scholarships for practicing middle and high school science teachers to pursue Master's degrees. Under the original grant, 24 teachers have been supported in their graduate coursework, and the first cohort is on track to graduate in December 2010. The August 2009 extension brings the total THECB support for the program to $700,000 and will allow for the recruitment of an additional cohort of master's students. This new cohort will begin their coursework in January 2010 and graduate in August 2011.

In addition, Dr. Ann Cavallo recently received news of a $149,400 supplement award from the National Science Foundation. This supplement will be added to the $749,567 NSF Robert Noyce Scholarship program for science and math teachers awarded in 2008 for a total award of close to $900,000. Dr. Cavallo is Principal Investigator of the NSF project in collaboration with Drs. Greg Hale, James Epperson, and Ramon Lopez, all of the College of Science. This grant project awards scholarships to students seeking high school physics, chemistry, biology, or mathematics teacher certification. For more information on these and other math/science education scholarships please contact Dr. Cavallo c/o Ms. Jamie R. Williams at robin@uta.edu.
