Leadership for Social Justice

Dr. Dannielle Joy DavisDr. Ava Muñoz, assistant professor in the Department of Education Leadership and Policy Studies, is currently writing two chapters for the Social Justice Book Series Leadership for Social Justice: Encouraging the Development of Others.  Her work will be featured in the chapters Building Social Justice: Issues of Human and Social Capital and Challenges in Social Justice: Transforming Others.  These chapters focus on the critical differences in superintendency seekers and mentoring the underrepresented into superintendency, specifically the education leadership programs that prepare candidates for those positions.

Dr. Muñoz recently published an article in the Journal of Women in Educational Leadership that discussed gender disparities in the most coveted school districts nationally.  The article uncovers themes related to factors that contribute to the low numbers of women in the superintendency and assistant superintendency, as well as provides suggested actions and strategies to make a path for women leaders in the future.  In addition to this article, Dr. Muñoz is the Co-PI on a statewide study that has begun collecting pilot data and will analyze superintendeny aspirations of both men and women central office staff.

Dr. Muñoz’s research focus is on gender studies in the superintendency, social justice and mentoring programs with an emphasis on gender studies. She is currently a co-editor for Administration and Supervision of Special Programs in Education’s 3rd edition.  For more information on Dr. Muñoz’s research, please visit her research profile.
