Amount:
Up to $24,000, prorated over the individual period of study. Fellowship payments cover tuition, required fees, books, and room and board, not to exceed $12,000 per academic year.
   
Eligibility Requirements:
Purpose: James Madison Fellowships are intended exclusively for graduate study in History and/or Political Science, leading to a master’s degree at any accredited college or university in the United States.

Eligibility: Junior Fellowships are awarded to students who are about to complete or have recently completed their undergraduate course of study and plan to begin graduate work on a full-time basis. Junior Fellows have two years to complete their degree. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals who are planning to become teachers of American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level.

Applicants must either currently posses a bachelor's degree or plan to receive a bachelor's degree no later then August 31 of the year in which they are applying. Fellows are expected to pursue and complete a master’s degree in one of the following:

· Master of Arts (MA) degree in American history or in political science;
· Master of Arts in Teaching degree (MAT) concentrating on either American Constitutional history or American government, political institutions and political theory;
· Master of Education degree (MEd) or the Master of Arts or Master of Science in Education, with a concentration in American history or American government, political institutions, and political theory.

Students are encouraged to begin preparing applications early since, in addition to official transcripts and sealed letters of reference, they must write an essay of approximately 600 words on the US Constitution.
