Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants are limited to graduate or undergraduate students majoring in education in institutions of higher learning throughout the United States. Officers, directors and employees of the National Institute for Labor Relations Research, the National Right to Work Committee, Members of the Selection Review Committee and their families are not eligible. Applicants must also: (1) Demonstrate potential for the successful completion of the educational requirements in a college or university Department of Education program and the potential of a successful application for a teaching license; and submit a transcript of grades. (2) Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of voluntary unionism and the problems of compulsory unionism in relation to education by writing an original essay of approximately 500 words.
   
Application Procedure:
A total application consists of three parts: 1. A completed formal application; 2. A copy of the most up-to-date transcript of grades; 3. A typewritten essay of approximately 500 words clearly demonstrating an interest in, and knowledge of, the Right to Work principle as it applies to educators. The purpose of this National Institute for Labor Relations Research scholarship is to enlighten future educators to a challenge which is rarely mentioned in teacher education textbooks. This challenge is to make an informed decision as to whether joining a teacher union is right for you. Awards are given in large part on the basis of your essay. A winning essay will be factual and well-written. While there is basic information on this web site, it is important that your essay express your own thoughts on the subject. Read the Introductory Letter and "Compulsory Unionism in Education." Complete the online scholarship application OR download and print out the four-page scholarship application. (If you cannot download the application, please email us at research@nilrr.org. Please be sure to include your complete mailing address and specify “Education” or “Teacher” scholarship. Applications will be mailed no later than December 15, and cannot be requested after that date.)
