First lady Laura Bush urged graduating students to use their education and talents to serve others during remarks Friday night at UT Arlington’s Graduation Celebration at Maverick Stadium.

“Keep these commitments to others now that you’ve graduated,” she said. “There are so many people who need your help.”

Mrs. Bush was the keynote speaker for the third annual event, which drew more than 6,000 graduates, faculty, staff and special guests.

“The class of 2007 can be proud of its roll in placing UT Arlington on the Presidents Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with distinction,” she said. “Congratulations to all of you.”

UT System Board of Regents member Robert A. Estrada, UT Arlington President James D. Spaniolo, Provost Dana Dunn and graduating senior Wajiha Rizvi, political science graduate, also made brief remarks. A fireworks display followed the program.
