Keynote Speaker*: Marc Fein

The Department of Communication welcomes Marc Fein—news anchor at KXAS-TV (NBC-5)—as keynote speaker for Comm Day 3.0.

Marc recently joined KXAS-TV (NBC-5) as their afternoon anchor. He is fresh from Atlanta's Turner Sports, where he was a studio host and reporter covering the full gamut of sporting events, including NBA, MLB, PGA, NASCAR, NCAA football, and PGA Championship. He has extensive hosting experience on national sports programs including the NBA news show (NBATV), The Beat (NBATV), Gametime (NBATV), and Inside the NBA (TNT). He also did sideline reporting for the NBA playoffs (TNT) and field reporting for MLB playoffs (TBS).

Prior to his stint at Turner, he was a sports anchor and reporter for KDFW-TV, at which time he also hosted the Dallas Cowboys' pregame show on FOX.

Due to the development in the Major League Baseball World Series, Newy Scruggs, the original keynote speaker, will be traveling to St. Louis on Oct. 25th for his KXAS-TV sports director duty and will not be able to speak at Comm Day.

Derrick Kinney

Derrick Kinney is Principal of the financial planning firm Derrick Kinney & Associates. He is a nationally-recognized financial advisor and is a frequent guest on national and local TV. Derrick has been interviewed as a financial expert by Money Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Newsweek, SmartMoney, Kiplinger's Personal Finance, Entrepreneur Magazine, the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He has been named "Who's Who" in Business by the Fort Worth Business Press. Derrick has been recognized by Texas Monthly Magazine as a 5-Star "Best in Client Satisfaction" Wealth Manager, an honor given to the top-rated financial advisors in Dallas/Fort Worth area, for the past 3 years.


Derrick and his team specialize in guiding people through the different financial transitions they experience throughout their lifetimes. Derrick is known for his unique ability to talk about money and retirement issues in an easy to understand and way. He is a 1993 graduate of UTA.


Jim Ryan

Jim Ryan has held one full-time job in his life – as a reporter/anchor for WBAP and ABC News Radio. In his 29-year career, Ryan has covered thousands of stories of local, national and international interest. He was embedded with the U.S. Navy in the spring of 2003 and watched as some of the opening salvos of Operation Iraqi Freedom were fired from a destroyer in the Persian Gulf. He covered the fury of the most destructive storm in American history as Katrina crashed ashore in Louisiana.


Jim is a two-time recipient of the Radio and Television News Directors Association's prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award. He also has received top national honors from Sigma Delta Chi and the Society of Professional Journalists and has been Best Radio Reporter three times by the Headliners Club of Austin. Jim has received numerous awards and commendations from the Houston Press Club, the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters and from the Press Club of Dallas. Jim married former WBAP reporter Beth Godell (a UTA graduate) in 1988; they have two children, Rebecca and James.


Pete Slover

Pete Slover is an attorney, a former newspaper reporter, and a member of the Advisory Council of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas. Pete graduated from the University of Texas School of Law and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1986. He spent the next 20 years in the newspaper business, including 17 years at The Dallas Morning News.


His specialty was investigative reporting, with an emphasis on open records. He left newspapering in 2006 and worked as lawyer and director of criminal investigations for Texas Comptroller Susan Combs.


Slover now works as in-house attorney at the country's largest, non-profit, member-owned electric Cooperative, a pioneer in sunshine and transparency in the business context.


Sean Bolton

Sean Bolton started his career while still working towards his bachelor of communication technology from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). He worked as a freelance web designer, designing such sites as Ipcounsel on demand, Wingman jet ski, Scooter Brown band and provided web maintenance to a variety of other sites in the DFW area. An avid technology buff, Bolton was active in student organizations during his time at UTA, including the Sigma Chi Fraternity.


He graduated UTA in the spring of 2010, but prior to graduating was offered a position at PartnerComm as a Database Administrator (DBA). While at PartnerComm, Bolton designed databases and did advanced reporting services for Fortune 500 companies, including Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Tenet Healthcare, and REI.


Bolton is now working at Ulterra Drilling, located in downtown Fort Worth, as a DBA. He is working on optimizing current systems for faster processing and recovery for data systems including Enterprise Resource Planning systems or ERP systems.


Sara Hull

Sara Hull leads the strategic management, client relations and day-to-day operations for a roster of accounts in the Schaefer Advertising portfolio, including our retail and travel and tourism verticals. With over 16 years of experience in integrated marketing communications, Sara has created and executed top-notch marketing strategies for everything from motorcycles to MRI systems. But her true depth of experience is built from the years of experience she has gained leading account teams and building successful programs for global lifestyle brands such as OshKosh B'Gosh Childrenswear, Harley-Davidson/Buell, Wolverine Outdoor, Justin Boots, and Burton Snowboards.


Sara also brings travel, tourism and hospitality experience to the mix with award-winning work on the Wisconsin Department of Tourism's Travel WI program and Summerfest, the World's Largest Music Festival.


Sara grew up in Fort Worth, headed north and graduated from Marquette University with a degree in PR, and suffered 15 Wisconsin winters before finally packing up her husband and then-three year old daughter, Lauren, to return home to Texas.


Tracy Tarrant Gilmour

Tracy Tarrant Gilmour is Director of Marketing at Sundance Square, a 35-block downtown Fort Worth mixed-use development. Gilmour is responsible for the public image of Sundance Square through publicity, media relations, consumer advertising, events, promotions and sponsorship Her team's marketing efforts were recently honored by receiving a Green Power Leadership Award from the EPA for its marketing of The Sundance Square/Green Mountain partnership.


Gilmour began her advertising and marketing career with Stephan Advertising Agency and after five years moved to Simon Property Group, where she held various positions from Marketing Director to Divisional Marketing Director.


Her success in cultivating Sundance Square has led her to serve on several North Texas committees. Gilmour was the lead contact for ESPN's footprint in Sundance Square for Super Bowl XLV.


Gilmour holds a Bachelor's degree from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas and the Certified Marketing Director accreditation from the International Council of Shopping Centers. She and her husband Tom have four children.

Malizy Scruggs

Malizy Scruggs is an effective communicator and seasoned public relations practitioner with nearly a decade of experience implementing community outreach programs, developing media relations strategies and managing high profile projects. As senior vice president of Open Channels Group, a Fort Worth-based public relations agency, Malizy leads the company's multicultural communications practice.


She began her professional career as a public relations representative for the Dallas Housing Authority. In that position, Malizy assisted with crisis management and led the public awareness campaign during Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. This campaign won the National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials Award of Excellence for the agency's emergency response efforts.


Malizy is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and serves on the Board of Directors for the Public Relations Society of America. She volunteers for the Fort Worth Business Assistance Center and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. A Dallas native, Malizy holds a Bachelor's in Public Relations from the University of Texas at Arlington. She lives in Arlington with her husband Craig and their daughter, Madison.


Bill Hartzer

Bill Hartzer is Standing Dog's Director of Search Engine Optimization and a frequent speaker/expert discussion panel participant at various search engine marketing and internet marketing conferences and events such as the Search Engine Strategies and WebmasterWorld's PubCon Conferences.


Bill writes frequently for Search Engine Watch and Search Engine Guide and is regularly published in many online publications. He currently writes the "Everything Google" column in Practical eCommerce magazine. He maintains a blog on his website www.BillHartzer.com and is a member of the Forbes Business and Finance blog network.


Bill is one of the original founders of the Dallas/Fort Worth Search Engine Marketing Association and has over 14 years of search engine marketing and social media marketing experience.


Robert Ackley

Robert Ackley is Vice President of Recruiting and Training Operations for RuffaloCODY, the recognized leader in providing strategic fundraising, enrollment management services and software. A graduate of the University of Oregon with a degree in Political Science, Ackley also has been a program manager, trainer, senior operations manager, and director of recruiting and training at RuffaloCODY since starting with the company in 1999.


In his current position, Rob leads a team of six dedicated employees who work on a number of recruiting and training initiatives company-wide.


Author of The Seesaw Strategy, a 21st century guide for creating a successful work /life balance, Rob is a member of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), is certified by the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction (IBSTPI) as a Training Manager, and has completed graduate level business studies at Tennessee Technological University. In his spare time, Rob enjoys travel and spending time with his family.


Sharon Dera

Sharon Dera, CPLP, is the chief executive officer of The Proficience Group, Inc., a human performance improvement and organizational development firm. Sharon has extensive experience working with all levels of employees in needs assessment, human performance, process improvement, staff development, managing and coaching. Her broad experience was developed by working in the retail, finance, healthcare, non-profit, government, manufacturing, hospitality, restaurant and travel industries.


Sharon's professional experience includes the execution of training and development programs for Expedia, Hotels.com, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, AC Delco, EFW, Inc., SkillsNET Corp., OmniAmerican Credit Union, Pier 1 Imports, Big Thought, Thriving Minds and the Autistic Treatment Center.


Sharon has an MBA from the University of Dallas and holds various certifications. She is also a contributing author of, "The Book of Road-Tested Activities," which provides workplace learning and performance professionals with an array of tried-and-true training tools for every occasion and purpose.


Jared Chism

Jared Chism is a global marketing intern at AT&T's corporate offices specializing in social media strategy and implementation. Chism not only executes social media for clients, but he also has become a specialist in using social media to brand himself as a "top recruit" for businesses.


Chism has a wealth of experience implementing strategy and maintaining social media accounts across multiple social networks. Prior to joining AT&T, Chism interned at the Fort Worth-based Balcom Agency, a fully integrated communications agency that thrives on "What's Next." At Balcom, he had the opportunity to work on accounts for Justin Boots, Tony Lama, Cash America International and more.


Chism is a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and served on the Mississippi Gulf Coast before, during and after Hurricane Katrina. He is scheduled to graduate from UTA in December with a bachelor of arts degree in communications-public relations.
