ARLINGTON, Texas - The Public Relations Student Society of America and Ad League, two student associations at the University of Texas at Arlington, joined forces recently to host a headshots event so students can establish a professional image online or enhance their portfolios.
Working together for a beneficial end result is what the Department of Communication is all about, according to D.J. Dupree, advertising senior and chief sales officer for Ad League. "It is important that we work together," Dupree said. "Why not work together? We are all on the same team. "
Convergence in the mass media is a major topic in the UT-Arlington Communication Department. In fact, a huge portion of the department's Communication Day event in fall 2011 was dedicated to the subject. In a simple sense, convergence in the media refers to the melding of different disciplines and the idea that mass media professionals today must have multi-platform skills.
The joint effort by the student organizations represents a different type of convergence, but marks a first step in integrating the aspiring professionals and introducing them to what the others are studying.
"In the grand scheme of things, the point is to make each person better, because we all bring something different and unique to the table," Dupree said.
The room was set up professionally with a camera, a huge white background and laptops. The laptops were equipped with Photoshop to fix any imperfections that the students wanted removed. When asked why it is important to have a professional headshot done, Elisa Tapia, a junior public relations and advertising double major, said, "I run a blog, and feel that having a professional headshot reflects my own professionalism and will ultimately enhance my blog."
