The Journal of Gender Studies published an article co-authored by Assistant Professor Dustin Harp, JOUR, titled “The spectacle of politics: Wendy Davis, abortion, and pink shoes in the Texas ‘fillybuster.’” The article, published in the April edition, covers State Sen. Wendy Davis’ filibuster of an abortion bill in the Texas legislature.

The bill, Senate Bill 5, banned all abortions after 20 weeks, required that doctors performing abortions have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and mandated that all abortion clinics meet the standards of hospitals or similar-grade surgical centers. Davis’ filibuster succeeded in delaying passage of the bill beyond the midnight deadline for the end of the legislative session, though it ultimately passed in a second session.
