Freedom Of Information Award for Montes

Bianca Montes, JOUR 2013, recently won the Nancy Monson Spirit of FOI Award for a body of work relating to law enforcement officers’ unlawful actions and police department hiring practices.

 

The award, sponsored by the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas and the Texas Press

Association, recognizes journalists and/or newspapers for outstanding efforts that uphold First

Amendment principles, increase public access to government and improve awareness of state

open government statutes.

 

Montes joined Amarillo Globe-News as its City Hall reporter in May having previously worked

as local government reporter at Victoria Advocate and as a freelance photographer at Dallas

Observer.

 

Earlier this year, Montes was awarded first prize for feature writing by the Texas Press Association and team reporting by Texas Associated Press Managing Editors.
