Available Scholarships for Department of Communication Students

The following scholarships are awarded each year in the Department of Communication (provided funds are available). Scholarship winners are announced at the annual convocation ceremony in April. All scholarships are for the following fall/spring term.

Applications to all departmental scholarships should be submitted via MavScholarShop. Our scholarships are expected to be available for application in February with a deadline in early March yearly. Donald & Dorothy Bunnell Endowed Scholarship in Communication

Established to recognize and celebrate his beloved wife, the late Dorothy Bunnell, Lt. Col. Bunnell recognizes “the importance of a liberal arts education and the value of a degree within the dynamic academic disciplines encompassing the field of communication.” This scholarship recognizes outstanding students majoring in any field of study within the Department of Communication at UTA.

Applicants must be majoring in the UTA Department of Communication (ADVT, BCMN, COMM, COMS, CTEC, JOUR, and PREL) and be a full-time student in the fall semester in which they would receive the scholarship.

Requirements: Application, letter stating career goals and financial need, and an unofficial transcript.

George W. & Lana B. Proctor Endowed Scholarship

Family, friends, and colleagues established this endowed scholarship to honor our beloved colleague and friend, George Proctor. He was an honored member of the family of the Department of Communication for more than 12 years. He was many things: a freelance writer, editor, artist, philosopher, and an enthusiastic educator. George Proctor’s legacy lives on through all those students, colleagues, and friends whose lives he touched.

Applicants must be undergraduate students majoring in ADVT, CTEC, JOUR, or PREL. They must also be in good academic standing for the fall semester in which they would receive the scholarship.

Requirements: Application, letter stating career goals and financial need, and an unofficial transcript.

DFW Interactive Marketing Association Scholarship

Established in 2011, the DFWIMA Scholarship is awarded to a student interested in the interactive marketing field who is actively engaged in courses related to the field.

Applicants must be a full-time student for the fall semester in which they would receive the scholarship, have a minimum 2.75 gpa at time of application, be majoring in ADVT or CTEC, must have completed a junior level class in ADVT or CTEC, and must show evidence of interest or activity in interactive marketing.

Requirements: Application, letter stating career goals and financial need, and an unofficial transcript.

Mark Holtz Scholarship

Named Texas play-by-play sportscaster of the year eight times, and elected to the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990, Mark Holtz was the Texas Rangers’ lead radio announcer for 13 years. To honor his memory, the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation awards two scholarships to students at UTA pursuing careers in Broadcast Journalism.

Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours for the fall semester and 12 hours in the spring semester in which they receive the scholarship, must maintain a 3.0 gpa, and send the Texas Rangers Foundation an official transcript and essay at the conclusion of the fall semester. Receipients are recognized at a Texas Rangers game held over the summer or early fall.

Requirements: Application, unofficial transcript, two letters of recommendation from UTA Department of Communication faculty, 500 word or less essay on “Why I Want a Career in Broadcast Journalism.”

Groner Endowed Scholarship - $10,000 Annually

The David E. Groner Endowed Scholarship was established to honor the memory of David E. Groner, long-time member of the Department of Communication at the University of Texas at Arlington, serving from 1964 to 1991. This scholarship provides assistance for motivated and academically able students who are pursuing a degree in communication studies.

Applicants must be incoming freshmen with an intended/declared major in communication studies with a minimum 1100 SAT/ 24 ACT or be in the top 20% of the high school class. With satisfactory progress toward a degree, as determined by the Groner Endowed Scholarship Selection Committee in the Department of Communication, the freshmen recipients may continue to receive this scholarship assistance for up to four subsequent years.

Requirements: Application, professional resume, personal statement (financial need, career goals, related extracurricular activities), and high school transcript.

Karin McCallum Endowed Scholarship

First awarded in 1996, this endowed scholarship was established by former students of the award-winning emeritus professor of Speech Communication, Karin McCallum. This scholarship is given to outstanding students majoring in Communication Studies in her honor.

Applicants must be a communication studies major at UTA, be a junior or senior, and be a full-time student for the fall semester in which they would receive the scholarship.

Requirements: Application, professional resume, letter of recommendation from a Communication professor, and an unofficial transcript.

Riedel Undergraduate Scholarship in Journalism

This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Neva McMurray Riedel, a student of journalism at the University of Texas. Mrs. Riedel’s sister became aware of the excellence of the journalism program at UTA, and in 1987 created this annual award to recognize an outstanding journalism student.

Applicants must be a journalism major at UTA, have earned at least 60 hours of college credit prior to application, completed at least 15 hours of UTA college credit by the end of the spring semester of application, provide evidence of commitment to pursue a career in print journalism, financial need, and have an excellent academic record. Applicants must also maintain full-time status for the semester in which they receive the scholarship.

Requirements: Application, statement of career goals and financial need, evidence of journalistic ability/experience (i.e. clips, outstanding class work, etc, and an unofficial transcript.

Charles Arrendell Family Undergraduate Scholarship in Journalism

First awarded in 1990, this scholarship was established to honor Charles Arrendell, a distinguished journalist and former chairperson of the Department of Communication from 1981-1989. After his sudden death in 1989, his wife, son, and many friends established this scholarship to be awarded to an undergraduate journalism student in his memory.

Applicants must be a journalism major at UTA, have earned at least 60 hours of college credit prior to application, completed at least 15 hours of UTA college credit by the end of the spring semester of application, provide evidence of commitment to pursue a career in print journalism, financial need, and have an excellent academic record. Applicants must also maintain full-time status for the semester in which they receive the scholarship.

Requirements: Application, statement of career goals and financial need, evidence of journalistic ability/experience (i.e. clips, outstanding class work, etc, and an unofficial transcript.

Lloyd Clark Journalism Scholarship

This endowed scholarship honors 1942 graduate Lloyd Clark and is given to an undergraduate student who intends to follow a news-editorial career. It is the hope of Mr. Clark’s classmates that those receiving the scholarship can match his performance on the Dallas Morning News, Phoenix Gazette, and Arizona Weekly Gazette.

Applicants must be a journalism major at UTA, be a junior or senior, have completed 15 hours at UTA, and be a full-time student in the fall semester in which they would receive the scholarship.

Requirements: Application, letter of application stating career goals and financial need, a writing sample, and an unoffical transcript.

Donna Darovich Endowed Scholarship

Friends and colleagues of Donna Darovich established this endowed scholarship to provide a permanent vehicle to honor Donna Darovich at the time of her retirement as the University of Texas at Arlington’s Director of Public Affairs.

Applicants must be a journalism major at UTA, have a minimum 3.0 gpa, and completed at least 30 hours by the end of the spring semester in which they apply for the scholarship.

Requirements: Application, submit journalism writing samples, and an unofficial transcript.

Murray C. & Nona Poston Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Postons, world travelers who spent 20 years traveling and writing articles for the travel industry and various news organizations. In 1979, at age 66, Mrs. Poston graduated from UTA with a journalism degree. Established in the Postons’ wills, this award provides support to future journalists.

Applicants must be a journalism major at UTA, must be a sophomore/junior/senior, must be full-time student in the fall semester in which they would receive the scholarship, must maintain a 3.0 gpa, and should demonstrate extant or potential skill for writing.

Requirements: Application, letter of application, evidence of journalistic ability/experience (i.e. clips, outstanding class work, etc, and an unofficial transcript.

Phillip Lynn Hall Scholarship

A 1980 graduate of UTA, Phillip Lynn Hall loved music, literature, and journalism. Following his unexpected death in 2001, his family established this scholarship to be awarded to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Communication at UTA in his memory.

Applicants must be a communication major at UTA, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, have a commitment to print journalism, completed a minimum of 12 hours in comunication courses (9 hours for grad students) or have a B.A. degree, have a minimum overall and departmental gpa of 3.25 and at least 9 hours of study remaining to complete communication degree, and be a full-time student for the fall semester in which they would receive the scholarship.

Requirements: Application, one page essay discussing your career goals, an unofficial transcript, and any transcripts from previous universities/colleges.

Sam Lea Endowed Scholarship

Sam Lea was a student at UT Arlington who earned a journalism degree in 2004, and at the time of his death in 2005, was pursuing a second degree in English toward a secondary teaching certification. He was gifted in conveying stories in both photography and words. In the words of his father “Sam was a generous, warmhearted man with a mind open to learning.” His gift of communication spilled over into his life in all areas, as he knew no strangers.” In honor of Sam’s memory, his family has established this scholarship to support the work of a student in journalism.

Applicants must be a journalism major at UTA, have a minimum 2.5 gpa, should have an interest in photography and/or teaching, and must be a full-time student for the fall semester in which they would receive the scholarship.
