Communication Studies

The communication studies program provides you with the opportunity to investigate communication processes as they occur within and among individuals, groups, organizations, and societies.

You will master the knowledge and skills related to the study of the communicative self, the study of how people create and interpret meaning, and the study of the effective articulation of ideas.

In addition, you will acquire the analysis and evaluation skills necessary to be critical consumers of personal, professional, and cultural communication.

As a major in communication studies, you will be qualified for a career in a wide range of positions in the field of business, government, education, and social services.

This program allows you to pursue a degree in speech communication or a degree in organizational communication.

Speech Communication

A degree in speech communication will provide you with a theoretical background in oral rhetoric, interpersonal communication, group processes, performance studies, presentational speaking, and persuasion.

Job opportunities related to speech communication are available in training and development, media relations, public affairs, social services, speech writing for political campaigns, teaching and the education industry.

Organizational Communication

A degree in organizational communication will provide you with a theoretical background in interpersonal, group, and organizational communication theory and presentational speaking.

Job opportunities related to organizational communication are available in corporate communication, training and development, human relations, labor relations, advertising, marketing and sales, professional consulting, international business, and communication technology.

In addition to general requirements for the degree Bachelor of Arts in Communication, students take the following courses. For current course descriptions, please check the university catalog or myMav system.

coms majors: A minimum of 39 semester hours, 18 of which must be 3000/4000-level courses.

coms minors: 18 hours, six of which must be 3000/4000-level, selected after consulting with an adviser.
