The awards honor faculty from around the University for outstanding research, teaching and service.

"We congratulate all of our College of Science honorees. It's wonderful to see the University honor these faculty members for their dedication and hard work," Dean of Science Pamela Jansma said. "Each of them is extremely deserving and represents the kind of excellence we strive for in the College of Science."

College of Science honorees include:

Distinguished Record of Research or Creative Activity - Daniel W. Armstrong, Robert A. Welch Chair in Chemistry and professor of chemistry and biochemistry. This award recognizes faculty members for achieving a distinguished record of research and scholarship or creative activity over an extended period of time. The award winner receives a plaque, an honorarium and a Research Enhancement Program grant.

Academy of Distinguished Scholars - Rasika Dias, professor and chair of chemistry and biochemistry. The academy of Distinguished Scholars exemplifies the University's commitment to quality research and creative activity. Academy members advocate the importance of research and creative activity, promote a sense of community among scholars, foster research and creative activity and advise the institution on research practices and policies. The recipient receives a permanent salary increase, a plaque, and medallion to wear with academic regalia.

President's Award for Excellence in Distance Education Teaching - Lee Ann Frederick, lecturer in biology. This award recognizes an individual who is an outstanding instructor in the area of web-based distance education. This recognized UT Arlington teacher has demonstrated excellence in distance education teaching, creating quality interaction with and showing exemplary responsiveness to UT Arlington's digital learners. The recipient receives a plaque and an honorarium.

Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching - Seiichiro Tanizaki, lecturer in chemistry. The Provost's Award honors non-tenure track instructors who have demonstrated a record of excellence in teaching, strong personal

Academy of Distinguished Teachers - James Epperson, associate professor in mathematics. This award recognizes tenured faculty for a sustained record of outstanding teaching, personal commitment to students and the learning process, and the ability to motivate and inspire students. Academy members receive a permanent salary increase, a plaque, and a medallion to wear with academic regalia.

Faculty Mentoring Program - Tuncay Aktosun, professor of mathematics; Benito Chen, professor of mathematics; Thomas Chrzanowski, professor of biology; Perry Fuchs, associate professor of psychology; James Grover, associate dean and professor of biology; William Ickes, Distinguished Professor of Psychology; Chaoqun Liu, professor of mathematics; Subhrangsu Mandal, associate professor of chemistry; Glen Mattioli, professor of earth and environmental sciences; Paul Paulus, professor of psychology; Krishnan Rajeshwar, professor of chemistry & biochemistry; and Jae Yu, associate professor of physics. These faculty members served as mentors for junior faculty in the University-wide Faculty Mentoring Program during the 2011-12 academic year.

Faculty Development Leaves for 2012-13 - Michaela Vancliff, associate professor of mathematics and Andrew White, professor of physics.

McNair Scholars Program Faculty Mentors - James Grover, associate dean and professor of biology; Jared Kenworthy, associate professor of psychology; Hristo Kojouharov, associate professor of mathematics; Timothy Odegard, associate professor of psychology; Ellen Pritham, assistant professor of biology; Shannon Amerildo Scielzo, assistant professor of psychology; and Eric Smith, assistant professor of biology. These faculty members served as mentors for undergraduate students in the McNair Scholars Program during summer 2011.

Research Enhancement Program Grants for 2012-13 - Perry Fuchs, associate professor in psychology and Judy Wilson, professor in kinesiology, "Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Treating Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis(EAE): An MS Model"; Jeffrey Gagne, assistant professor in psychology, "The Early Temperament and Psychopathology Research Project"; Brad Pierce, assistant professor in chemistry & biochemistry, "A Proton-Inventory Study of Substrate-Binding in Cysteine Dioxygenase".
