Donor Profile WILLIAM L. and MARTHA W. HUGHES were both educators who proudly served Arlington and UT Arlington. Professor William Hughes was a faculty member for forty years, retiring as Chair of the Biology department in 1965, when he was named Professor Emeritus. Early in her career, Martha Hughes served as a member of the Physical Education and Chemistry departments at the university. Later, she served as a science teacher in the Arlington Independent School District for nearly 20 years. Mrs. Hughes became a UT Arlington Distinguished Alumnae in 1975 and was a member of the Arlington YMCA Board and the Texas State Teachers Association Board. She received the Arlington Senior Citizen Award in 1979 and was a member of the Arlington Library Board. She was also an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a soloist and choir director. Her son, Dr. Bill Hughes, described her as “a person with a great sense of humor who was always stirring things up and who loved to laugh.”
