Donor Profile TRUMAN D. BLACK, Ph.D. was a Professor in the Physics Department at UT Arlington from 1965-2011. Born in Houston, he earned his BS from the University of Houston in 1959 and received his MS degree from Rice University in 1962. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Rice in 1964. Professor Truman joined UT Arlington's Physics Department in 1965, where he was a pioneer in influencing its growth for 46 years. He helped generate millions of research dollars for students and equipment, contributed to the creation and development of graduate programs in Physics, and authored more than one hundred publications. Famous for his nitrogen demonstrations, he participated in the Young People’s University, where he educated and entertained hundreds of school children. Professor Black’s most significant contribution was to the students he taught and mentored. His personal life was also full and varied. He enjoyed playing football, racquetball, and tennis. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his two children, Elizabeth and Bryan, and traveling the world with his wife, Margie. Later in life, Professor Black devoted himself to his grandchildren.
