Meet the Staff

  Penny Acrey

Penny Acrey, LMSW, Director

Penny Acrey, LMSW, currently serves as Director of the Office for Students with Disabilities.  She is a proud alumna of UT Arlington School of Social Work where she focused on Direct Practice in Mental Health.  Her areas of interest are Disability and Trauma.  Penny began her career at UT Arlington in 2004 with Disability Services, and then went on to serve as Assistant Dean for Student Success in the School of Social Work.  Penny is happy to rejoin her Student Affairs family in the Office for Students with Disabilities as Director.  She has presented her work at numerous national and international conferences and currently serves on several Advisory Boards for area agencies serving people with disabilities.  Originally from Houston, she and her family now live in Fort Worth.

Education includes the following:

  • BSW from UT Arlington School of Social Work in 2002
  • MSW from UT Arlington School of Social Work in 2004

  Demarice Dumerer

Demarice Ferguson, MS, CRC, Associate Director

Demarice Ferguson currently serves as the Associate Director for the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD). She is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and has worked for the State of Texas as well as in private industry assisting persons with disabilities with return to work issues. Demarice has been involved in the field of rehabilitation, education and counseling since 1995 with experiences ranging from transition and vocational counseling, job placement, workplace accommodations and community advocacy. She also has 6 years of experience as a human resource manager where focus was placed on interviewing, hiring and development of staff. Areas of interest were labor relations, workers compensation, workplace accommodation and return to work issues.

Education includes the following:

  • BA in Psychology from the University of North Texas, 1993
  • MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of North Texas, 1995

  Jaime Palma

Jaime Palma, M. Ed., Assistant Director for Testing and Adaptive Technology

Jaime currently serves as the Assistant Director of Testing and Adaptive Technology in the Office for Students with Disabilities. He is responsible for coordinating the proctoring of accommodated testing for students registered with OSD. He is also responsible for coordinating the alternative formats of books for individuals with print disabilities and training individuals on assistive technology. His background is in web development having worked at the UT El Paso and the School of Social Work at UT Arlington.

Education includes the following:

  • B.A., Computer Information Systems from University of Texas at El Paso, 2008
  • M.Ed., Instructional Specialist - Bilingual Education from University of Texas at El Paso, 2012

  Elvira Smith

Elvira Smith, MA, CRC, Disability Specialist

Elvira Smith currently serves as the Disability Specialist for the Office of Students with Disabilities. She began her career in 1995 working with children with disabilities, followed by her work coordinating services for adults with disabilities. Originally from Arkansas, Elvira moved to Texas in 2009 and worked for the state of Texas assisting persons with disabilities return to work. She is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and has experience in advocacy, case management, vocational counseling, assistive technology, job accommodation and job placement. She has also been involved in the field of domestic violence and prevention.

Education includes the following:

  • BA in Criminal Justice from the University of Arkansas Little Rock, 2000
  • MA in Counseling from the University of Arkansas Little Rock, 2009

  Gilda Williams

Gilda Williams, BSW, Office Manager

Gilda Williams has been an employee of University of Texas at Arlington since 2004.  She currently serves as the Office Manager for the Office of Students with Disabilities (OSD). Gilda has 20 years of experience in social services. Her professional background includes: administration, counseling, training and advising (of which: she considers an Executive Directorship of a youth mentoring agency in the state of Tennessee to be most rewarding). Gilda has also been involved in the fields of: special education, employment, teen parent intervention, and youth empowerment. Gilda holds professional memberships and a board certification which supports her advocacy for marriage and family enrichment. She has also served on various professional boards and committees throughout her career.

Education includes the following:

  • CDA in Early Child Development from Vernon Regional Jr. College (1989)
  • BS in Social Work from LaSalle University (1996)
  • Board Certification (Biblical Counseling) IBPPC (2009)
