Adaptive Resource Center

The Adaptive Resource Center (ARC) provides services to students who are registered through the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD). All students must complete the registration process in OSD before they can receive services in this facility. The lab allows students with disabilities to access computer systems, information resources and on-line services and provides students with tools for both alternate access to print material and for writing.

The main purpose of the ARC is to provide academic test proctoring and disability assistance. When rooms are not being used for testing purposes, the rooms and computers may be used for studying, research, or word processing. Some of the computers are equipped with assistive technology such as screen readers, screen magnifiers and voice recognition software. For students who are visually impaired, the ARC is equipped with a Braille embosser and scanner.

Students who have registered through the Office for Students with Disabilities and have been approved for testing in a reduced distraction environment or testing in the ARC may schedule to take their tests in the ARC. Each semester you must request your Letters of Accommodation and deliver them to your instructor. Once you have done this, you may come to the ARC to schedule your test in the ARC. You should read the complete policies and procedures on testing in the Adaptive Resource Center.

The computers in the Adaptive Resource Center (ARC) are equipped with assistive technology software. Students who are registered with the Office for Students with Disabilities may come to the ARC to use the computers. The assistive technology includes: JAWS (screen navigation software); Magic (screen magnification software); Dragon NaturallySpeaking (voice recognition software); Inspiration (visual mapping, outlining, writing software); and Kurzweil 3000 (reading, writing and learning software) with a scanning station. Additional equipment maintained in the ARC which may be checked out on a semester basis are: FM Systems for hard of hearing individuals; AlphaSmart NEO (note taking assistance device). You must request this equipment as an accommodation and be approved before any equipment is checked out. Students using computers in the ARC are expected to follow University computer usage polices.

If you would like to learn more about the assistive technology, you may schedule an appointment to meet with the Assistant Director. If you would like to check out equipment you should meet with your OSD counselor, be approved to check-out equipment and read the Equipment Check Out Polices and Procedures.
