Requirements for Admission

Availability

Students must be high school Juniors or Seniors.

Minimum Test Scores

High School juniors or seniors can participate in the Honors Academy Dual Credit Program by demonstrating college readiness through one of the following:

  • An SAT I score of at least 1070 (Critical Reading + Math) with scores of at least 500 in both Math and Critical Reading.
  • An ACT composite score of at least 23 with scores of at least 19 in both Math and English.
  • TAKS scores of at least 2200 in both Math and English/language arts and a TAKS Essay score of at least 3.

If a student does not meet any of the above requirements they can also become eligible for the Early Admission Program by achieving the minimum passing standards under the provisions of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI). This provision requires the student to take one of the following approved testing instruments:

  • ACCUPLACER offered by The College Board.
  • Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) offered by National Evaluation Systems, Inc.
  • ASSET or COMPASS offered by ACT.

The student only needs to take the portion of the test for which they have not met the exemption requirement stated above. If you take one of these exams, please request to have the scores sent to the UT Arlington Office of Admissions, Records & Registration. Information to take the Accuplacer or the THEA on the UT-Arlington campus is available at the UT Arlington Testing Services website. The following minimum scores must be achieved to meet the TSI requirement in the areas where an exemption cannot be met:

  • ACCUPLACER: Reading Comprehension - 78; Elementary Algebra - 63; Writing - 6 on essay, or combined scores of 80 on sentence Skills and 5 on the essay.
  • THEA: Reading - 230; Mathematics - 230; Writing - 220.
  • ASSET: Reading Skills - 41; Elementary Algebra - 38; Writing - 6 on essay, or combined scores of 40 on Writing Skills and 5 on the essay.
  • COMPASS: Reading Skills - 81; Algebra - 39; Writing - 6 on essay, or combined scores of 59 on Writing Skills and 5 on the essay.

Cost

The cost is $50 per semester hour ($150 per three-hour course). Books and Parking are extra. Some courses have additional equipment and lab fees.

How To Apply

To apply for the Honors Academy, students must submit the following:

  • UT Arlington Application for Admission (see below)
  • Official high school transcript (including PSAT or SAT, and TAKS scores)
  • Application Fee: $50.00 (payable to UT Arlington)
  • Early Admissions Agreement and the Course Selection form (see below)
