In addition to fulfilling its fundamental role of providing a quality education to tens of thousands of students, the University is a notable source of stable, well-paying jobs that generate a substantial economic impact not only through employment but also through ongoing operations and spending. Most UT Arlington graduates remain in North Texas, boosting the area’s productivity. The University is also one of the most significant employers in the region, with a workforce of 3,900.
The total external benefits, including UT Arlington’s spinoff research and alumni employed in North Texas, create a $12.8 billion annual economic impact and more than 122,000 permanent jobs in the area. This represents about 4 percent of the entire regional economy. Statewide, the totals are $13.6 billion in output per year and more than 131,000 jobs.
The total annual benefits stemming from the University’s ongoing operations create a $1 billion economic impact and more than 14,600 permanent jobs in North Texas. This includes educational and research spending as well as student and visitor spending. For the state as a whole, the impact is $1.1 billion in annual output and about 15,400 jobs.
UT Arlington’s ambitious construction projects and campus improvements also generate a considerable economic stimulus. Major recent and ongoing construction activity has created a $502.7 million economic impact and 5,861 person-years of employment in North Texas. For the entire state, including benefits to the surrounding region, the total impact on business activity is an estimated $539 million and 6,268 person-years of employment.
