B.S. National Taiwan University, 1988

Areas of Expertise

MEMS (microelectromechanical system) RF and optical devices (RF MEMS and MOEM), nanofabrication and applications, wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical components and networking, monolithic microwave/millimeterwave integrated-circuit (MMIC) components and antennas, and quasi-optical systems and sensors.

Background

Jung-Chih Chiao received his B.S. in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the National Taiwan University in 1988, his M.S. and his Ph.D. degrees in the Electrical Engineering Department at the California Institute of Technology in 1991 and 1995, respectively. He served as a Research Scientist in the Optical Networking Systems and Testbeds Group at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore, now Telcordia) from 1995 to 1997. He joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Hawaii - Manoa as an Assistant Professor in 1997 and became an Adjunct Professor in 2001. J.C. joined Chorum Technologies in 1999 as a Product Line Manager and Senior Technology Advisor. Dr. Chiao joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Texas at Arlington in September 2002 as an Associate Professor.

Dr. Chiao has published 82 technical journal and conference papers. He is one of the authors for the book "Active and Quasi-Optical Arrays" and the editor for the SPIE proceedings "Device and Process Technologies for MEMS and Microelectronics." He holds 1 patent and 13 pending patents in RF MEMS, MEMS optical and liquid crystal technologies.

Dr. Chiao was the chairman for the Device and Process Technologies for MEMS and Microelectronics Conference in the SPIE 2001 International Micro/MEMS Symposium and the chairman for the Smart Sensors, Actuators and MEMS Conference in the SPIE 2003 International Symposium on Microtechnologies for the New Millennium. He served in the technical committees of the APOC Asia-Pacific Optical and Wireless Communications Conferences, the Smart Structures and Materials Conferences, the Society of Engineering Science Nanofabrication and Nanodevices Symposium, and participated in the Hawaii Center for Advanced Communications.

Dr. Chiao's research interests include MEMS (microelectromechanical system) RF and optical devices (RF MEMS and MOEM), nanofabrication and applications, wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical components and networking, monolithic microwave/millimeterwave integrated-circuit (MMIC) components and antennas, and quasi-optical systems and sensors.
