Microgrids and Energy Storage: You Can’t Have One Without The Other: A JCESR Symposium
Everything is bigger in Texas, and our energy challenges are growing just as they are around the country. The deployment of microgrids with energy storage has the potential to help alleviate Texas’s energy challenges but we can’t have one without the other. While both microgrids and energy storage have matured significantly, there are still many technological barriers that need to be overcome for each to see its true potential in solving our energy problems. The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and Oncor Electric Delivery, in conjunction with the Argonne National Laboratory led Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR), will host a regional event to explore challenges and opportunities of these technologies. JCESR is a major research partnership that integrates government, academic, and industrial researchers from many disciplines to create new breakthrough energy storage technology. This event will serve as a forum for industry, utility companies, academic and government researchers, and policy makers to discuss energy storage and potential major applications facing Texas and the South Central region at both the transmission and the distribution level.
This one and a half day event will offer tours of Oncor’s new 660 kW microgrid in Lancaster, Texas as well as UTA’s microgrid and energy storage characterization facilities. A panel discussion will be led by members from the following communities:
National Laboratory (Sandia National Laboratory)
Electric Industry (ERCOT, Oncor Electric Delivery and San Diego Gas and Electric Delivery)
Defense (Lockheed Martin, Naval Surface Warfare Center - Philadelphia)
University (University of California at San Diego)
Each will share their perspective on microgrids and energy storage.
Abstracts are invited for featured presentations from members of the microgrid and energy storage industry and research communities. A reception the evening before the symposium, after the tours are completed, will offer additional networking opportunities for those traveling to the meeting. A student poster competition will provide visibility into research topics in microgrids and energy storage, and their applications in many fields.
Hosted by University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), UTA Pulsed Power and Energy Laboratory (PPEL), UTA Energy Systems Research Center (ESRC), Oncor Electric Delivery, Joint Center for Energy Storage Research, Argonne National Laboratory.
