Office of the President, UTA

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that we have started the search for the next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and I am seeking your assistance in identifying the very best candidates for the search.

Since this is an executive level position, we will be following the “Opportunity Rule” as established by UT System as UTS 187: Interviews of Executive Administrators and Other Senior Administrators, and developed in our HOP as policy 5-514: Interviews of Executive Administrators and Other Senior Administrators.

Dr. Duane Dimos, vice president for research, is chairing the search committee that has wide representation from our campus and includes:

  • Ali Abolmaali - Chair, Department of Civil Engineering
  • Anne Bavier - Dean, College of Nursing and Health Innovation
  • J.-C. Chiao - Janet and Mike Greene Professor of Electrical Engineering
  • David Coursey - Chair elect, Faculty Senate
  • Kelly Davis - Chief Financial Officer and Vice President
  • Teresa Doughty - Dean, College of Education
  • Andre Fortune - Assistant Vice President, Student Affairs
  • Fernando Jaramillo - Chair, Department of Marketing
  • Morteza Khaledi - Dean, College of Science
  • Vijayan Pillai - Professor, School of Social Work
  • Ya’ke Smith - Morgan Woodward Distinguished Professor of Film
  • Sonja Watson - Director of the Women's & Gender Studies Program and Associate Professor of Spanish
  • Shannon Williams - Director of Student Services

In addition two members of the community will also be serving on the committee:

Robert Estrada, Chairman, Estrada Hinojosa & Company, Inc. and past UTS Regent

Vicky Teherani, President, VT Capital, Inc. and UTA alumnus

We will be adding an undergraduate and graduate student at a later date.

We have engaged Russell Reynolds Associates, a respected national executive search firm, to help manage the process. The search consultant, Ms. Mirah Horowitz, has conducted a number of successful searches for our campus already and is well positioned to help us attract the very best.

The search committee and consultant met last Friday, and I anticipate that they will have a position profile completed this week. Once completed, the profile will be posted on the Senior Leadership Searches website. I encourage you to contact either Duane Dimos at ddimos@uta.edu or the search firm at UTAProvost@Russellreynolds.com if you are aware of individuals you think would be a good match for the position.

While my desire is to make this an expeditious search, our primary goal must be to ensure that we attract a strong slate of candidates for consideration—and ultimately an outstanding leader in the field. UTA is known for its excellence, its student-centered ethos, and tremendous academic reputation and finding the right individual for this position will be crucial in our drive to become the Model 21st -Century Urban Research University and set standards for others to follow.

I would like to extend my thanks to Dr. Dimos and the search committee for their commitment to this important endeavor. And I thank you in advance for your ideas and assistance in nominating the best-possible individuals from around the nation.

Sincerely

Vistasp M. KarbhariPresident
