Office of the President

September 21, 2017

Dear Members of the UTA Community:

Please join me in congratulating our former Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Ron Elsenbaumer on his new appointment as Chancellor of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Ron joined UTA in 1991, 26 years ago, and has a distinguished record of service and achievement at UTA.

Besides being a faculty member in the department of Chemistry in the College of Science and in the department of materials science and engineering in the College of Engineering, Ron served UTA in a variety of roles including Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Vice President for Research, Provost and Interim Provost, and most recently as Senior Advisor to the President for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, and Interim Dean of CAPPA.

A member of the National Academy of Inventors, Ron holds 35 patents and secured more than $10 million in external grants and funding. As vice president for research, his skill and expertise as a scientist and entrepreneur helped lead the university’s growth into a Carnegie Classification R-1 institution which is projected to achieve close to $94 million in research expenditures during 2017.

His tenure as provost contributed to significant advancements in student success rates, enrollment growth, and numbers of graduates at all degree levels. The university is now the largest producer of graduates in North Texas and third largest in the state. Ron helped secure UTA’s designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and its standing as one of the top universities in Texas and in the nation for awarding undergraduate and graduate degrees to underserved groups including African-Americans and Hispanics, according to Diverse Issues in Higher Education.

I will always be grateful to Ron for his tremendous assistance and support from the first day that I joined UTA. His dedication to the institution, his commitment to the values we hold dear, and his focus on ensuring that our students receive the very best educational experience possible have been a constant, and his contributions to our progress in moving rapidly along our Strategic Plan are innumerable. He has spent the last year leading our reaccreditation efforts and has graciously agreed to continue to be involved till the cycle is successfully completed at the end of this year.

Ron has been a valued colleague and friend and I will miss having him at UTA. I hope you will join me in congratulating him on this well-deserved appointment and wishing him well as he prepares to lead Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne to a tremendous future. I know that Ron will always remain a Maverick at heart.

Sincerely,

Vistasp M. Karbhari
President
