Medical Mentors

The University of Texas at Arlington and Texas Health Resources, one of the largest faith-based, nonprofit health systems in the United States, are collaborating to offer undergraduates pursuing medical careers a unique opportunity to experience a physician’s work firsthand. The Pre‑Medical Student Preceptorship Program began as a pilot project in spring 2015 and formally launches this fall, pairing high-achieving students selected through a highly competitive process with physician-mentors in a hospital setting.

Life-Changing Research

A robotic glove being developed through the Texas Medical Research Collaborative at the UT Arlington Research Institute in Fort Worth could help stroke victims, improving their long-term functional abilities and quality of life. The lightweight device is less expensive and more pliant than current exoskeleton technology.

Starring Role

UT Arlington alumna Dené Hill stars in PBS’ JFK‑LBJ: A Time for Greatness, playing the key role of Geri Whittington, an aide to President Lyndon Baines Johnson, in the show, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. Hill says she honed her voice at UTA, which gave her the opportunity to live, work, and travel as a professional opera singer, which then led to amazing opportunities, like performing in this film.

Award-Winning Photo

Alumnus Tom Pennington has won the 47th Annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Photo Contest. His winning image, dubbed “Take That,” depicts Baltimore Ravens defensive back Brynden Trawick in midair about to intercept a pass intended for Dallas Cowboys receiver Dwayne Harris. “I’ve never been star-struck, but I do have a real appreciation for what these athletes do,” Pennington says.
