Join the MavStorm

Maverick fans will join forces to be part of the MavStorm heading to Waco on Friday, Nov. 13, when the Lady Mavs take on the Baylor Bears. Tickets are $30 for alumni and $15 for students and include a ride aboard a chartered bus to and from the 6 p.m. game in Waco’s Ferrell Center. Check uta.edu/homecoming for more information.

Winning IDEAS

UTA has been awarded a highly competitive, five-year $2.62 million Department of Education grant to enhance services for transfer and other non-traditional students and help more underserved students earn college degrees. The grant will assist in the creation of a new IDEAS Center — for Innovation, Diversity, Excellence, Access and Success — as a resource to increase graduation and retention rates among Hispanic and lower-income students.

Shark Tank Talk

Tickets are on sale now for the 2015‑16 Maverick Speakers Series lecture by entrepreneur Daymond John, founder of the global lifestyle brand FUBU who appears on the television show Shark Tank.
His 7:30 p.m. talk Nov. 10 at College Park Center is titled “Shark Tank Entrepreneurship.” Preferred ticket packages plus free general admission tickets are available at utatickets.com.

Winning Artist

UTA Assistant Professor of Art and Art History Sedrick Huckaby has been named a finalist in a national competition hosted by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Huckaby is one of seven finalists in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, and his work will be included in a juried exhibition set to open in Washington, D.C., on March 12, 2016. The first-prize winner will receive $25,000, as well as a commission to create a portrait of a living individual for the museum’s permanent collection. Winners will be announced March 10.

UTA Student’s Dream Job

Carlos Pratts, star of hit film McFarland USA, is inspiring young adults to pursue their career goals through higher education. Pratts headed to Hollywood in 2006 after attending UTA and credits his parents for supporting his dream of becoming an actor. “Giving up on your dream is the saddest thing in the world,” he says. “You need to be willing to work at it.”

InnovationDay@UTA

Celebrate entrepreneurial excellence and success among UTA students, faculty, and researchers, as well as innovators in the surrounding community. InnovationDay@UTA aims to stimulate local entrepreneurship and innovation and includes high school and college robotics competitions, inspiring speakers, and opportunities to meet with angel investors. Held at College Park Center, InnovationDay@UTA is free but preregistration is required.

Distinguished Alumni Awards

UTA’s annual alumni awards dinner is a night to celebrate fellow Mavericks for their individual achievements, contributions to their industries or professions, service to their community and demonstrated loyalty to the University. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. in the University Center Bluebonnet Ballroom. Tickets available at alumni.uta.edu/homecoming.
