Dear UTA alumni,

Thousands of UTA graduates will walk the College Park Center stage this week as they join the ranks of some 200,000 alumni worldwide. We’re happy to share some video stories of student success, photos from our traditional Maverick Ring Ceremony, and other news about your alma mater. Maverick Graduates

Meet a few members of the Class of 2015 in a series of online videos including Randi Burns, a former cheerleader who has battled Lyme disease. She started the nonprofit lyme‑aid.org to raise awareness about Lyme disease and will graduate from the University she loves in just a few days.

Nursing graduate Ali Alrubaiee is making a difference in veterans’ lives and he credits UTA with instilling in him a love of community.

Ring Ceremony

Students received their class rings and experienced some of UTA’s favorite traditions at the Maverick Ring Ceremony on Dec. 12 in the Bluebonnet Ballroom. After receiving their rings, students listened to a description and explanation of symbols on the ring. Rubbing the bronze head of E.H. Hereford is said to bring good luck and is a favorite part of the ceremony. Ernest H. Hereford was dean of North Texas Agricultural College and the first president of Arlington State College, both predecessors of UTA.

Top‑Ranked Scientists

Two UTA professors of chemistry and biochemistry, Daniel W. Armstrong and Purnendu “Sandy” Dasgupta, are ranked among the Top 100 most influential people in the world of analytical science by the monthly journal The Analytical Scientist. The Power List 2015 includes 100 influential scientists from around the world. The United Kingdom-based publication’s editorial comprises scientists from the world’s leading institutions.

UTA and UT Austin were the only two Texas universities with representatives on the list, and UTA was the only one with two honorees.

Community Service

Maverick student athletes are making winning moves on and off the court, serving the community and making a difference to those in need. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee won the Sun Belt Community Service Initiative for November with a wide range of service projects that included a canned food drive, visits with patients at Cook Children’s Medical Center, and providing backpacks filled with food for underprivileged children. UTA Volleyball’s Dig Pink match raised more than $2,300 for the Sideout Foundation. View a video about their work.
