Winter 2016 Commencement

More than 4,808 students participated in commencement ceremonies December 15-17 at UTA’s College Park Center, about a 13 percent increase over the 4,251 who graduated in fall 2015. In addition to the 4,808 fall candidates, 2,108 graduates who completed their degree requirements over the summer also participated in the commencement ceremonies. The newest graduates join the ranks of more than 210,000 UTA alumni around the globe, many working in business, health care, engineering, education, information technology and other high-demand fields. The UTA Mavericks men's basketball team has soared to a No. 2 ranking in the latest CollegeInsider.com poll of mid-major colleges in the nation following a first-ever victory over a Top 25 team. The team is gaining national recognition as a potential March madness "bracket buster" according to NCAA.com. This is the season to get excited about your Mavericks and catch them in action at College Park Center. Children under 18 receive free admission on December 31 and tickets for the remainder of the season are available at UTAtickets.com. Jason Shelton Named Dir of UTA African American Studies Center

On Jan.1, 2017, Jason Shelton will begin his tenure as the new director for UTA's Center for African American Studies. Shelton is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and has been a national leader on the sociology of religion, race, and class since he first joined UTA in 2008. "Dr. Shelton distinguished himself early on as a very strong candidate to lead UTA's Center for African American Studies," said Ron Elsenbaumer, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs. "He has visionary leadership as demonstrated by his teaching, research activity, mentoring, and engagement with students, faculty, staff, and others within and outside of the African-American community." Dasgupta Receives Award

Purnendu "Sandy" Dasgupta was named recipient of the 2016 Eastern Analytical Symposium's highest award, the Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Fields of Analytical Chemistry. The Hamish Small Chair of Ion Analysis in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Dasgupta was recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to the field including devising a new method to measure the amount of blood present in dry blood spot analysis.

UTA Wins UTC Grants

Three national U.S. Department of Transportation grants that could be worth about $12 million in funding during the next five years have been awarded to researchers in the College of Engineering and the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs. UTA was one of only a few universities to land multiple projects in the DOT competition for funding.

Lewis Named AAAS Fellow

The American Association for the Advancement of Science recently elected electrical engineering professor Frank Lewis a fellow, citing him for his "contributions in developing new neural adaptive control architectures, parameter tuning algorithms, and techniques with improved performance for nonlinear control systems."

UTA Basketball Doubleheader | Don your Maverick blue as you make your way to College Park Center to cheer on UTA basketball as both the men's and women's teams take on Sun Belt conference foe the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. The women's game begins at 2:00 followed by the men at 4:30 pm. Children under 18 receive free admission.

January 22 | Sunday

UTA Day at the Rodeo |  Head to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo with all of your favorite Mavericks. Mark your calendars for this year's alumni event on January 22 from noon to 1:30 pm. Immediately following lunch, the group will walk to Will Rogers Coliseum to catch all the rodeo action. Your $25 ticket includes lunch, a rodeo ticket, and Maverick giveaways. GET YOUR TICKETS

February 6 | Monday

InnovationDay@UTA |  A free event that seeks to promote, encourage and recognize innovative and entrepreneurial excellence and success amongst UTA students, faculty, and researchers, and in the surrounding community. The day also attracts industry and investors to North Texas to increase local entrepreneurship and innovation. Sessions begin at 8:30 am. REGISTER FOR FREE

February 16 | Thursday

MSS: Kevin O'Leary | The popular business entrepreneur and TV personality Kevin O'Leary is coming to campus as the first Maverick Speakers Series event in 2017. O'Leary will present Swimming with a Shark - An Evening with Kevin O'Leary at College Park Center. Audience Q&A and book-signing will follow the lecture.
