Producing a Greater Yield
Innovative Collaboration: UTA and BRIT

Two of Tarrant County's leading research institutions have formed a distinctive partnership with an eye on future job creation and greater sustainability through discoveries in plant and environmental sciences. UTA and The Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) announced they are collaborating to offer expanded research opportunities for graduate level studies. The research jointly conducted by UTA students, faculty, and BRIT scientists could lead to higher crop yields, disease-resistant crop varieties, cheaper food, new biofuels and an improved understanding of the earth's plant biodiversity. Flu Fighter
FLU FIGHTER

Perena Gouma, a professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at UTA, has published an article in the journal Sensors that describes her invention of a hand-held breath monitor that can detect the flu virus. The recently published article explains in-depth how the single-exhale sensing device works and the research involved in its creation, which was funded by the National Science Foundation through the Smart Connected Health program. First Ever AIAA Fellow
First AIAA Fellow

Frank Lu, a professor in the Aerospace Engineering Department, has been named a Fellow of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is the first UTA faculty member to earn the honor. Lu, who is also a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering and the Royal Aeronautical Society, was cited by AIAA for "sustained contributions in gasdynamics and detonation-based technologies, and development of novel experimental facility and measurement techniques." He will be formally inducted at the organization's Aerospace Spotlight Awards Gala May 3 in Washington, D.C. READ MORE

Innovation Day

UTA will feature a high school and college student "Shark Tank"-style competition, student and faculty startup pitches and posters, and a showcase of community startup companies and services for entrepreneurs at InnovationDay@UTA, 8:40 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday Feb. 6, at the E.H. Hereford University Center. "UTA is rapidly becoming a focal point for innovation in the North Texas region, not only for our faculty and students but for the surrounding community as well," said Duane Dimos, UTA's vice president for research. Giving Back: Festival of Ideas

Distinguished Alumnus Mustaque Ahmed, class of '81, was the first student vice president of UTA's International Student Organization. He helped encourage diversity and make campus a place where one could "think freely, speak freely, write freely, sing freely, and perform freely." In this spotlight video, Ahmed discusses what motivated him to support the Festival of Ideas Global Institute in the College of Liberal Arts. The institute hosted the Borders, Boundaries, and Barriers: Expansive Thinking and Global Solutions immigration forum on February 3rd, an event made possible by Ahmed's continued support. Military Appreciation Day | Join us as we salute military service members at the February 4 basketball doubleheader against Texas State at College Park Center. Admission is free for all active and inactive military personnel and the first 250 fans receive a free lapel pin. The Lady Mavs tip-off at 2 pm followed by the men's team at 4:30 pm. Health Professionals Day | The second annual Health Professionals Day hosted by the College of Nursing and Health Innovation will focus on raising awareness for heart health and will feature a health rally prior to the men's basketball game. The event starts at 3 pm with giveaways, a buffet, and VIP section seating for the game. REGISTER HERE

February 16 | Thursday

MSS: Kevin O'Leary | Popular business entrepreneur and TV personality Kevin O'Leary is coming to campus as the first Maverick Speakers Series event in 2017. O'Leary will present Swimming with a Shark - An Evening with Kevin O'Leary at College Park Center. Audience Q&A and book-signing will follow the lecture. GET YOUR TICKETS

February 22 | Wednesday

All Majors Job Fair | More than 160 employers are expected to attend the spring 2017 All Majors Job Fair at the Maverick Activities Center Gym on UTA's campus. The fair will run from 10 am to 3 pm. Alumni are invited to attend. No registration is required. Visit the Career Development Center website to view a list of attending employers. READ MORE
