UTA Entrepreneurship
It's no surprise entrepreneurs Tyler Sickels (SolGro, Inc.) and Farhaj Mayan (Fade) found themselves in an international accelerator program, as their previous accomplishments include winning top awards in the Maverick Business Pitch competition, part of the Maverick Entrepreneur Program created by a generous alumnus. The resources and hands-on learning experiences they received at UTA demonstrate the University's commitment to building an ecosystem of entrepreneurship that supports the ideas of students. Nanophotonic Devices
A research team from UTA led by Robert Magnusson is working with the Army Research Laboratory to develop nanophotonic devices that could have applications in thermal imaging and resonant filtering. Magnusson, an electrical engineering professor and the Texas Instruments Distinguished University Chair in Nanoelectronics, is the principal investigator for the $1.2 million collaborative agreement. Applications of this research could also be used in sensors for medical diagnostics, chemical analyses, and environmental monitoring. READ MORE

Medical Innovation District
Shima Hamidi, director of UTA’s Center for Transportation Equity, Decisions and Dollars, is leading a project for the city of Fort Worth, which is looking to strengthen its medical district. Hamidi and her research team, led by Research Associate Ahoura Zandiatashbar, are working with hospitals, health care facilities, the community, and other businesses to determine strengths and weaknesses of the district, along with its physical assets, networking capacities, business ties, social makeup, and challenges. All-Star Maverick
Former UTA standout Hunter Pence was named an American League starter for the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game on Thursday night (June 27). The MLB All-Star Game will be held July 9 at Progressive Field in Cleveland and can be seen live on Fox (6:30 p.m. CT). Pence was the leading vote-getter among AL designated hitter candidates, as he earned the fourth All-Star selection of his 13-year major league career. READ MORE
