2019 Homecoming - More spirit, All maverick

Reconnect with your fellow alumni during UTA’s Homecoming 2019: More Spirit, All Maverick. Festivities during the week of Nov. 4-10 include the Distinguished Alumni Awards on Friday, Nov. 8, and special alumni group gatherings on Saturday, Nov. 9. COMBATING THE OPIOID CRISIS
Combating the Opioid Crisis

Nancy Ochoa was 15 years old the first time she used heroin with a group of friends. Now a 23-year-old mother of two, she is one of hundreds of patients in recovery after receiving help from social workers educated and trained at UTA and now working in different health organizations across North Texas. EASING COASTAL FLOODING
Easing Coastal Flooding

As sea levels rise worldwide, U.S. coastal areas are seeing increased flooding, causing damage to infrastructure and natural areas. Civil engineering Assistant Professor Michelle Hummel and research partner Kevin Befus of the University of Wyoming have received a three-year, $748,865 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to investigate ways to alleviate the flooding. UTA alumni gathered last week for a networking event in Houston. Alumnus Laif Afseth ’84, president of Amegy Bank, hosted the reception, which is part of ongoing efforts to connect with the more than 11,000 UTA alumni who live and work in the Houston area.

Alumna on ESPN

ESPN's SportsCenter aired a feature on Darlene Hunter ’06, a former member of the UTA Lady Movin’ Mavs wheelchair basketball team and current assistant professor in the School of Social Work. After sustaining a permanent spinal cord injury at age 4, she became a decorated Paralympian.

Distinguished Alumni Awards | The annual event recognizes alumni and friends for their professional and civic achievements, community engagement, and support for UTA. The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. in the E.H. Hereford University Center’s Bluebonnet Ballroom. TICKETS

November 9 | Saturday

Homecoming Basketball Game | Watch the men’s team take on the University of Tulsa. The action tips off at 7 p.m. in College Park Center and features the coronation of the Homecoming king and queen at halftime. TICKETS

Homecoming Golf Tournament | Enjoy breakfast, lunch, prizes, and 18 holes of golf at Waterchase Golf Club in Fort Worth. The four-person scramble begins at 8:30 a.m., and the deadline to register is Friday, Nov. 1. SIGN UP

Digital Culture Roundtable | UTA’s Center for Theory presents “Digital Culture: Promises, Progress, and Power,” a roundtable discussion about the role of digital technology in society.
