UTA CELEBRATES GRADUATES
UTA Celebrates Graduates

More than 5,200 students are set to graduate from UTA this week at College Park Center. The newest members of the Maverick family will join about 240,000 UTA alumni, who earn the highest first-year median wage of graduates from any UT System academic institution, according to the 2019 UT Smartbook. Included among the esteemed commencement ceremony speakers are alumni Sam Mahrouq ’91, chairman and CEO, MEI Group; Hari Vasudevan ’05, P.E., founder and CEO, Think Power Solutions; and Shirlee J. Gandy ’70, president of Fort Worth’s RPM Commercial. READ MORE

SHAH RECEIVES Prestigious DISTINCTION
Shah Receives Prestigious Distinction

Surendra Shah, a UTA Presidential Distinguished Professor and preeminent civil engineering and materials science expert, has become the latest UTA faculty member to be named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Election as an NAI fellow is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors. Dr. Shah is the 17th UTA faculty member named an NAI fellow. READ MORE

FUTURE NURSE REFLECTS
Future Nurse Reflects

When Fatima Barker relocated to the United States from her native Philippines, she ran into some challenges getting her physical therapy license transferred. When she went back to chasing her dream of becoming a nurse, she set her sights on UTA’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation (CoNHI). “I feel like UTA is the best place to go to nursing school,” said Barker, who graduated this week. CoNHI is the No. 1 producer of baccalaureate-degreed nurses in Texas and is the largest nursing program of any public institution in the country.

POLICE CHIEF NAMED TO TOP POST
Police Chief Named to Top Post

Earlier this month, Gov. Greg Abbott appointed UTA alumna and Police Chief Kim Lemaux ’98 as chairwoman of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, the organization that establishes and enforces standards to ensure that the people of Texas are served by highly trained and ethical law enforcement, corrections, and telecommunications personnel. Q&A: Jamar Jones

Jamar Jones ’17 is a UTA alumnus and music industry veteran who has performed with Patti LaBelle, Jamie Foxx, and Jill Scott. As a UTA assistant professor and the director of the Music Industry Studies program, he focuses on teaching students how to manage artists, run record labels, and produce albums.

DUAL CREDIT STUDY
Dual Credit Study

Barbara Tobolowsky, doctoral program coordinator in UTA’s College of Education and associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies, has received a nearly $1 million grant to explore the benefits and limitations of different approaches to dual credit coursework.
