Alumni Welcome Grads

UTA alumna Shirlee J. Gandy ’70, president of Fort Worth’s RPM Commercial, was the commencement speaker for the College of Liberal Arts ceremony last week, welcoming the new graduates into the Maverick community. Two other alumni also served as commencement speakers: Alumnus Hari Vasudevan ’05, P.E., founder and CEO, Think Power Solutions, spoke at the College of Engineering ceremony, and Sam Mahrouq ’91, chairman and CEO, MEI Group, spoke at the College of Business ceremony.

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER
Mother and Daughter Story

The road to graduation for Ndeye Ndaw was one that started in Senegal and ended at UTA with a master’s degree. Ndaw graduated last week with a Master of Science in social work. Her daughter, Awa Sy, also graduated during last week’s commencement ceremonies with a Bachelor of Arts in public relations. Both were able to attend UTA because Sy’s dad, Cheikh Sy, a student in UTA’s College of Engineering, won the Diversity Immigrant Visa program. UTA CHEMIST HONORED
UTA Chemist Honored

A decorated chemist and professor at UTA is being honored for his seminal contributions to his field. Daniel Armstrong, Robert A. Welch Distinguished Professor, is receiving the 2020 Lifetime Achievement in Chromatography Award by LC GC, the largest multimedia platform of peer-reviewed technical information in the field of chromatography and the separation sciences.

Q&A: FLORENCE HASELTINE

National Academy of Medicine member Florence Haseltine has spent nearly three decades promoting the advancement of women by being at the forefront of health technology. Dr. Haseltine, presidential distinguished professor in UTA’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation and executive director of health research, now spends her time focusing on expanding research programs in women’s health, genomics, and disability studies. Maverick Speakers Series: VIP Reception with Common | Attend a VIP reception at 6 p.m. prior to hip-hop artist, actor, and activist Common taking the College Park Center stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets also include VIP seating and reserved parking.
