A MAVERICK WELCOME
Hundreds of volunteers—among them UTA President Vistasp Karbhari, alumnus and Arlington City Council member Marvin Sutton ’05, and members of the Movin’ Mavs wheelchair basketball team—helped students move in to their UTA homes this week. About 10,000 students live on or adjacent to campus, categorizing the University as a four-year, primarily residential campus, according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. PHOTONICS EXPERTISE
UTA has strengthened its research group in photonics through the addition of James Coleman, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and Catrina Coleman, two distinguished scientists and leaders in the areas of lasers and photonic devices. BLOOD VESSEL RESEARCH
A UTA researcher has found that blood vessels within bone marrow may progressively convert into bone with advancing age. The research by Rhonda Prisby, associate professor of kinesiology in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, led to the discovery of bone-like particles in the peripheral circulation. Published in the journal Microcirculation, her findings could help physicians detect and treat potentially life-threatening conditions. READ MORE

NEW MENTOR PROGRAM
UTA is launching a new system to virtually connect alumni with students who have questions about navigating their professional career. The student-driven platform is entirely online and allows students to log in, connect with an alumni mentor, and set up meetings by phone, Skype, or in person. BE A MENTOR

MAJOR LEAGUE MAV
Former UTA pitcher Joel Kuhnel is the latest Maverick to reach the Major Leagues. After being called up last week by the Cincinnati Reds, the right-handed reliever struck out the first batter he faced, St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina. Kuhnel spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons with the Mavericks. READ MORE
