A LOOK AT WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON

FIRST GEN SUCCESS
First Gen Success

UTA, one of the largest and most diverse universities in Texas, is increasingly gaining recognition for the performance of its first-generation students. This month, the educational nonprofit ScholarShot ranked UTA tied for first in Texas on the Texas Public University Report Card for serving first-generation, low-income students. This demographic represents more than half of the students enrolling in state universities and a majority of those who receive financial aid, according to ScholarShot. In 2019, Washington Monthly magazine ranked UTA first in Texas and 23rd nationally for the performance of first-generation students. READ MORE

SOCIAL WORK IMPACT
Social Work Impact

In response to the opioid crisis, a new program at UTA is training graduate social work students to be addiction recovery specialists. Katherine Sanchez, UTA associate professor of social work, talked with KERA about how the training program works. “The end goal is to improve chances of long-term recovery for people with substance use disorder,” Dr. Sanchez said. “Having a well-trained and knowledgeable workforce is going to help address the needs of this very vulnerable population.” READ MORE

Q&A: DREW BOEHM
Q&A: Drew Boehm

In 2019, Drew Boehm became UTA’s first esports coach, serving as the program’s assistant director. He sees “something special” in store for the program and the students competing in it, noting the growth and profitability of the thriving esports industry. Boehm shares his insight on esports, including how he turned his love for gaming into a career and how esports programs fit into higher education. READ MORE

NSF Grant

With support from the National Science Foundation, Yan Wan, UTA associate professor of electrical engineering, and her team are developing a new generation of networked, unmanned aerial vehicles to bring long-distance, broadband communications capability to first responders in the field.

CEDAR FEVER
Cedar Fever

Andrew Hunt, a UTA associate professor and associate chair of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department, discusses North Texas allergy sufferers' least favorite time of the year: cedar fever season. In this five-question interview, Dr. Hunt explains how climate change affects pollen counts and how Texans with allergies can battle back against mountain cedar.
