ROADS FROM RECYCLABLES
UTA researchers Sahadat Hossain and Warda Ashraf are combining their two areas of expertise—recycling and asphalt/concrete, respectively—to lead a two-year, $342,588 feasibility study on building plastic roads, funded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). “Now that the international market for U.S. recycling materials no longer exists, we need to find and create local uses and markets for recycled plastics,” Dr. Hossain said. “TxDOT is focusing on increasing use of sustainable construction material, and this feasibility study of plastic roads is the agency’s latest effort.” READ MORE

HISTORIAN WINS AWARD
An associate professor of history at UTA has won the 2020 National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies Book Award for her work examining connections between the agricultural industry and border enforcement in the Rio Grande Valley. Cristina Salinas, who specializes in U.S. and Mexican-American history, won the award for Managed Migrations: Growers, Farmworkers, and Border Enforcement in the Twentieth Century. She is a faculty associate for UTA’s Center for Mexican American Studies. READ MORE

UTA alumnae Faith Geiger, MaryAnn Means-Dufrene, and Tracie Palmer were profiled in a Fort Worth Magazine story highlighting women in leadership positions in Fort Worth. Geiger and Means-Dufrene run their company Collective Growth, and Palmer is president of Bounty Minerals. READ MORE

ENGINEERING AWARD
UTA’s College of Engineering earned a Bronze Award—the highest level of recognition—from the American Society for Engineering Education’s Diversity Recognition Program. The American Society for Engineering Education created the Diversity Recognition Program to honor engineering colleges that make significant, measurable progress in increasing diversity, inclusion, and degree attainment outcomes in their programs.
