NURSING STUDENTS READY TO HELP
Lucas Ferris and Orlando Flores, senior nursing students at UTA, are less than one month away from earning their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees. They both say they are ready for the challenges of providing care in the era of COVID-19. With more than 19,000 students, the College of Nursing and Health Innovation is one of the largest nursing schools in the nation and the largest producer of baccalaureate-degreed nurses in Texas. UTA PUBLIC HEALTH EXPERT
Erin Carlson, associate clinical professor and director of graduate public health programs in UTA’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation, said she believes mitigating the spread of COVID-19 is a team effort that requires more than just wearing masks. “Mask usage and good hand hygiene have been shown to significantly reduce the spread of respiratory infections,” Dr. Carlson said. “However, people need to understand that masks alone are not enough.” READ MORE

HEART RESEARCH
A bioengineer at UTA is developing an imaging technique and a special electrocardiogram for zebrafish to determine why they are able to regenerate their heart tissue after cardiac arrest. Juhyun Lee, an assistant professor in the UTA Bioengineering Department, received a three-year, $450,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to investigate why zebrafish regenerate their hearts so quickly and whether the knowledge could apply to humans.
