SURPRISE GRADUATION FOR VIETNAM VET - Steve Kennedy

In 1967, Steve Kennedy was nine hours shy of completing his history degree from what was then Arlington State College when he received his commission in the U.S. Army. He had to leave school to begin training as an infantry officer and helicopter pilot. Now age 75, Kennedy has graduated from UTA. It took more than 50 years, some dusty paper transcripts, teamwork from administrators in the College of Liberal Arts, and Kennedy’s son-in-law to make it possible.

UTA WELCOMES FUTURE MAVERICKS

More than 200 future Mavericks participated in a unique drive-thru event, celebrating their decision to enroll at UTA. High school seniors received UTA gift bags and “Maverick Made” yard signs during a safe, physically distant celebration, with student ambassadors placing Maverick swag in car trunks as vehicles lined up alongside College Park Center. The effort was a creative alternative to in-person high school signing day events usually attended by university representatives each spring at area high schools. READ MORE

MAVERICK SELECTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS PROGRAM
MAVERICK SELECTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS PROGRAM - Hector Carranza

Hector Carranza, a Ph.D. student in physics at UTA, is one of only 62 students nationwide to be selected for the prestigious Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Student Research program. Carranza will spend a year conducting research on light-mass dark matter searches at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, or Fermilab, in Batavia, Ill. He will work with Fermilab scientist Angela Fava on the ICARUS neutrino experiment, work that may point to a new kind of neutrino called the sterile neutrino.

On Saturday, May 23, Maverick Business Pitch Competition (MavPitch) finalists gave their pitches virtually to the judges, and seven start-up companies were awarded a total of $132,500. Each finalist will have an opportunity to come back and compete in the fall MavPitch competition for up to $25,000 more. The award funds for student entrepreneurs were made possible by a generous alumnus. READ MORE
