Be alert to unemployment scam

The Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office has published a short video detailing how cyber thieves are hacking personal information to steal unemployment benefits. This insidious crime is ripping off millions of dollars from unsuspecting people, many of whom are still employed and live in Tarrant County. The victims then get stuck with the consequences. Watch the video.

To help UTA employees avoid their name and Social Security number from being used to file for unemployment benefits in any state, the Office of Human Resources recommends watching out for a major warning sign and a subsequent course of action:

  • Remain vigilant and open all mail from unemployment agencies regardless of the state. If you have not attempted to file for unemployment, do not disregard mail from an unemployment agency as unimportant or a mistake. This mail could be a sign that someone is attempting to use your identity.
  • If you receive a notice regarding unemployment, contact Mary Schmenk in the Office of Human Resources at mary.schmenk@uta.edu or 817‑272‑9680.

Generator upgrades at CAPPA, Woolf Hall

The Office of Facilities Management has scheduled activities to upgrade the emergency generators serving the CAPPA building and Woolf Hall 8 a.m. until approximately noon Saturday, May 22. This connection will require an outage to only those electrical services currently backed up by the buildings’ emergency generators. Service to the remainder of both buildings will remain operational.

It is recommended you save any computer work or data in progress to prevent any possible data loss. To prevent any possible damage, turn off all electronic equipment including computers, scanners, and copiers; they do not need to be unplugged.
