Bredow Named Interim Chair of Electrical Engineering

University of Texas at Arlington Dean of Engineering Dr. Bill Carroll has announced the selection of Professor Jonathan Bredow to become the interim chair of the Electrical Engineering Department. He replaces Professor Raymond Shoults, who is retiring.

Dr. Bredow has been a faculty member at UT Arlington since 1989, shortly after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. He was named a Professor in 2001. Dr. Bredow holds a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1980 and worked as a Biomedical Engineer at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas from 1981 to 1983 and then as a research associate in Taiwan for a year before pursuing his doctoral degree.

His main area of research has been in microwave remote sensing of the environment. Dr. Bredow’s contributions include the experimental determination of sources of microwave scattering from vegetation, sea ice and terrain. This supports the development of electromagnetic models that are important for remote sensing from space. This research led to sensing uses such as microwave imaging of objects through partitions and through soil layers, health monitoring of structural materials, and noncontact measurements of alcohol vapor in motor vehicles. He has produced more than 100 journal and conference publications in these areas.

Dr. Bredow has been co-directing undergraduate laboratory development since 1999. For this, he has made more than $1.2M in equipment acquisitions. Partially due to his success here, Dr. Bredow received the College of Engineering’s Excellence in Teaching Awardin 2003. In addition, he has been collaborating with Arlington Independent School District for more than five years in pre-engineering instruction to high school students.

“During my time as interim chair,” said Dr. Bredow, “I hope to draw together faculty with different expertise to form a cohesive unit that will bring this department higher visibility and recognition for its accomplishments in research and education.”
