Faculty, Students Honored for Professional, Personal Achievements

 

Four faculty members in the College of Engineering were recognized during the annual
President’s Convocation for Academic Excellence for their contributions to the University, their profession and student enrichment.

Professor of Electrical Engineering Robert Magnusson was inducted into the University’s Academy of Distinguished Scholars. Membership in the academy exemplifies achievements in research and creative activity, the fostering of a sense of community among scholars, and advising the university on research practices and policies. In September 2008, Dr. Magnusson was named the Texas Instruments Distinguished University Chair in Nanoelectronics, a $5 million endowed position.

Professor of Civil Engineering Anand Puppala was inducted into the University’s Academy of  Distinguished Teachers. Membership in the academy recognizes a sustained record of outstanding teaching, personal commitment to students and the learning process, and the ability to motivate and inspire students. In February 2005, Dr. Puppala received the College of Engineering’s Excellence in Research Award.

Professor of Electrical Engineering Venkat Devarajan receive the Graduate Dean’s Award for Excellence in Doctoral Student Mentoring, the first of its kind to be presented. Since coming to the College of Engineering in 1990, Dr. Devarajan has supervised 10 doctoral and 50 master’s students. In February 2003, Dr. Devarajan received the College of Engineering’s Lockheed Martin Award for Excellence in Teaching and in 2002 received the College of Engineering’s Excellence in Research Award.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Senior Lecturer Dr. Nancy Michael was named the Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advisor. The award recognizes Dr. Michael’s demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students or outstanding academic advising administration. Computer Science and Engineering Senior Lecturer Linda Barasch received an Honorable Mention for this award.

In addition to these faculty honors, 38 engineering students were recognized as University Scholars, denoting their academic positions in the top one percent of the student body at The University of Texas at Arlington.
