What Engineers Do
Biomedical engineers design instrumentation for non-invasive measurements of human structures and functions (cell migration, organ blood flow, limb & body mobility). Design biocompatible implants (artificial organs, tissue-engineered ograns, skin) and automated systems for rapid identification of human genes. Develop computer models of cells, organs and whole body functions.
Civil engineers plan, design and maintain infrastructure systems while considering environmental constraints and ensuring sustainable development. Typical infrastructure systems include buildings, roadways, bridges, airports, mass transit systems, retaining structures, dams, flood control, water treatment and distribution systems, and wastewater collection and treatment facilities.
Computer Scientists / Computer Engineers / Software Engineers
Computer scientists, computer engineers, and software engineers design and maintain computer systems and software applications solving theoretical and practical problems. Involves mainframes and microcomputers, distributed and parallel processing, languages, computational theory, wireless and mobile computing, data mining, and the mathematical structure.
Electrical engineers design electronic systems using semiconductors and integrated circuits. Work in signal processing, imaging systems, telecommunications, antennas, electro-optics, and neural networks. Applications in electrical power systems, complex digital systems for computers, control systems, robots, remote sensing and measurement systems.
Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineers
Industrial Engineers design systems combining people, processes and technology to achieve organizational goals. Industrial Engineering includes applications in manufacturing, logistics, communications, banking, transportation, retail and many other industries.
Materials Science Engineers
Materials science engineers design, develop, and apply advanced materials that have the desired weight, strength, corrosion resistance, toughness, conductivity, wear resistance, process ability and cost effectiveness to meet tomorrow's demanding application needs.
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineers
Mechanical engineers design thermal and mechanical systems, including steam and gas turbine power plants, automobiles, cooling systems for mechanical and electronic systems, and manufacturing processes. Aerospace engineers design advanced atmospheric and space flight vehicles; integrating aerodynamic propulsion structures and materials, and guidance, navigator and control systems.
