Wolfram Schommers to Speak at UTA
Sunday, April 1, 2012
The impact of nanotechnology will be tremendous. The manipulation of atoms, molecules, and so on will allow constructing new technological worlds and will bring fundamentally new possibilities in materials science and other disciplines as, for example, in the field of medicine. No doubt, for all these future developments theoretical and computational nanoscience (nanotechnology) is of particular relevance since the properties at the nanolevel are in general very sensitive to small variations of the characteristic parameters. The future opportunities for the development of nanosystems are fantastic but, on the other hand, the human’s responsibility is imperative simultaneously.
Wolfram Schommers is a Theoretical Physicist. He began his studies of physics at the Technical University of Munich and continued his course work at the University of Muenster and the University of Applied Research in Hamburg, receiving the diploma in physics (Diplom-Physiker) and in technical physics (Diplom-Ingenieur). He received his doctoral degree (Dr. rer. nat.) in theoretical physics. After a brief intermezzo in the industry, Schommers joined the Research Centre of Karlsruhe (now the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology). He is also Professor in China and Europe.
Wolfram Schommers concentrates his scientific activities on computational and theoretical nanoscience, surface science, solids and liquids, superionic conductors. He is in particular active in the foundations of physics. Schommers has published the results of his research and thoughts in various scientific journals and also in the form of books. He is the editor of the Handbook of Theoretical and Computational Nanotechnology (a 10 volume set) and is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Computational and Theoretical Nanoscience. Dr. Schommers also wrote the book Quantum Theory and the Pictures of Reality, which deals with basic physics.
