Study will help Texas determine its place in manufacturing sector
San Antonio Business Journal
The Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center has launched a study to help Texas manufacturers find out how competitive they are in the global economy. The study is the first step in a long-term effort to help manufacturers statewide position themselves for future growth and weather the current recession.
Texas' survey is part of a coordinated multi-state effort by the American Small Manufacturers Coalition that includes 15 other states.
Manufacturing company owners, CEOs and senior level executives can participate in the 30-minute online questionnaire up until April 8 at http://www.ngmstudy-texas.com/ . There is no charge to participate, and individual company responses will be held in confidence. Study participants will receive a report showing how they rate.
“This study gives businesses the insight to be competitive, now and in the future,” says Susan Tully, director of TMAC Business Operations with the University of Texas at Arlington. “The value to state policymakers is that it identifies opportunities to support progress towards world-class competitiveness.”
The study results will provide data for manufacturers, business leaders and state and national policymakers about how manufacturers rank against performance benchmarks and target improvements where needed.
“The study results will provide a scorecard, and the scorecard will tell us what we need to do to improve,” said Mike Klonsinski, board chairman of the American Small Manufacturers Coalition. “For example, a low score on global engagement may indicate resources are needed to help manufacturers sell into overseas markets.”
Manufacturing contributes $196 billion in added value to the Texas economy and employs nearly one million people, according to TMAC.
