Government Procurement Conference set in Arlington
12:00 AM CDT on Thursday, August 6, 2009
The University of Texas at Arlington Automation & Robotics Research Institute and its Extension Centers are hosting the 13th Annual Government Procurement Conference on Wednesday at the Arlington Convention Center.
Businesses that want to compete for government contracts can learn how to find opportunities and structure winning bids. Many government agencies require that a percentage of their procurements must be set aside for small businesses.
The conference begins promptly at 8:15 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. Registration starts at 7:30.
It will include information on federal, state and local government agencies and their prime contractors and subcontractors. More than 1,200 people attended last year's conference.
Online registration is available through today at www.gpc-texas.org. Admission is $100, and the fee does not include lunch.
Sponsorships and exhibitor slots are still available.
Keynote speakers include Michael Fallon of the Southwestern Division of the Army Corps of Engineers and Michael Taylor, deputy district director for U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, honorary conference chairman.
Some of the workshop topics offered include federal supply schedules; doing business with a defense supply center; subcontracting to the federal prime contractors; doing business with the postal service; doing business with the Army/Air Force Exchange Service, Federal Aviation Administration, state contractors and municipalities; and veterans' business opportunities.
The General Services Administration is hosting mini-workshops in the exhibit hall.
A limited amount of free registrations for attendees and exhibitors are available on the conference Web site for veteran- and service-disabled-veteran- owned businesses.
A CAGE code (commercial and governmental entity) is required at the time of online registration.
Major sponsors include DynCorp International, Raytheon Co., L-3 Communications Corp., Bell Helicopter Textron, Lockheed Martin Corp., Vought Aircraft Industries Inc., American Airlines Inc., Army Corps of Engineers, GSA, Small Business Administration and others.

On Sunday, we wrote about Lee Park & Arlington Hall Conservancy, which is observing its 100th anniversary. We didn't have room to mention how colorful the history of the site was before it became Lee Park, from early inhabitants who left stone tools that date back 3,000 years to Texas Rangers, fleeing from attacking Indians, who camped here in 1837 and referred to the nearby "creek with all the turtles."
The earliest records of land ownership date from the Republic of Texas in 1845, when William Grigsby received a land grant consisting of a half section of land (320 acres).
