Publish a Practical Book for Structural Engineers on Plastic
Design for Earthquake Resistant Steel Structures
PHOENIX - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Schuff Steel Company,
the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations
(NCSEA) and the International Code Council (ICC) recently
published "Performance-Based Plastic Design
Earthquake-Resistant Steel Structures." The authors are
Subhash C. Goel, Ph.D., P.E., Professor Emeritus Structures
and Materials Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor,
MI, and Shih-Ho Chao, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Civil
Engineering, University of Texas, Arlington, TX. Schuff Steel
Company is a subsidiary of Schuff International, Inc. (OTC:
SHFK), a leading family of companies providing fully
integrated steel construction services.
According to Jay Allen, SE, executive vice president of
sales and engineering for Schuff International, "The book
provides structural engineers, educators and students with
practical guidance on how to design a building for desired
seismic performance using the new Performance-Based Plastic
Design (PBPD) method. The book offers clear explanations of
design methodology. It also applies the methodology to
different structural systems while clearly demonstrating each
step of the process through numerous design drawings, formulas
and tables."
The book is a collaborative effort based on research
conducted by Goel and Chao at the University of Michigan.
Research was sponsored by the American Institute of Steel
Construction; NUCOR Research and Development; and Nabih
Youssef Associates, Structural Engineers. An advisory group
consisting of 13 leading academics and engineers from across
the country read and commented on the manuscript.
"Schuff helped underwrite the book based on its
contribution to the steel industry. It is extremely
informative for practicing engineers, as well as for those of
us in the steel fabrication and erection business who are
involved in the planning and constructing of
earthquake-resistant structures," said Allen.
"Performance-Based Plastic Design Earthquake-Resistant
Steel Structures" is also available on CD. To purchase a copy
of the book or CD, contact ICC at ICCsafe.org or call
