Tier One funding allocations decided
12:00 AM CDT on Friday, October 30, 2009
BACKGROUND: The new Texas Research Incentive Program allocates $25 million this year and another $25 million next year for seven schools: UT-Dallas and Texas Tech University, plus University of North Texas, UT-Arlington, UT-El Paso, UT-San Antonio and University of Houston. The money is supposed to help the seven campuses become top-notch research institutions, like UT-Austin or Texas A&M. Funds will pay for faculty, graduate student stipends, laboratories and other related expenses. It's a matching program, with campuses receiving state money based on how much private money they've raised.
WHAT'S NEW: The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the amounts going to each campus Thursday. UTD and Tech will receive the lion's share of a $50 million pot of state funds to help campuses build up their research profile.
Tech leads the pack with $21.3 million over the next two years. Next is UTD at $15.1 million. UNT was approved for $1.7 million, and UTA for $550,000.
