Engineers Week 2012

Things are gearing up and this year is expected to be the best Engineers Week ever! New events such as a Glow-in-the-Dark Ping Pong Pallooza and an Engineering Carnival will make for a very exciting week! UT Arlington Engineer Developing 'Biomask' to Aid Soldiers Recovering

UT Arlington engineers working with Army surgeons are developing a pliable, polymer mask embedded with electrical, mechanical and biological components that can speed healing from disfiguring facial burns and help rebuild the faces of injured soldiers. The Biomask project is led by Eileen Moss, an electrical engineer and research scientist based at the UT Arlington Automation & Robotics Research Institute in Fort Worth. J.-C. Chiao Named Janet and Mike Greene Endowed Professor of Engineering

The Greene's committed $125,000 toward the professorship; their gift is being doubled in value through the University's Maverick Match program, which uses natural gas royalties to leverage new commitments. "It's an exciting time to be involved with UT Arlington," said Mike Greene, a 1969 College of Engineering graduate. "Janet and I are very pleased to be able to support the College of Engineering, its faculty and students." Details

Fueling a Future City

Over 200 middle school students in 60 teams came to UT Arlington's College of Engineering to show off how they would fuel a city of the future. The North Texas Regional Future City Competition, sponsored by the Fort Worth IEEE section, was held in Nedderman Hall on Saturday, January 21st. The Future City Competition is a national, project-based learning experience where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade imagine, design, and build cities of the future. Students work as a team with an educator and engineer mentor. Student teams plan and design virtual cities with SimCity 4 software (donated each by Electronic Arts), build physical models with recycled materials and a budget of just $100, research and write a solution to an engineering problem, write a narrative describing their city, and present their ideas before a panel of judges. UTA Takes Top Place

The UT Arlington team competing in the AT&T pilot plan for the "2011 Coding Challenge" beat out Rutgers and Georgia Tech to win the first prize of $8,000. Georgia Tech placed second and Rutgers third. Each university had a team of five to seven undergraduate students with faculty oversight. Teams were given a 10-week challenge to see who could develop the best application for the Real Estate Department at AT&T. It was an opportunity for the team to develop a solution that could then become an application moved to the live environment at AT&T. David Levine, senior lecturer from the Computer Science and Engineering Department, was the faculty mentor/advisor for the seven students on the UTA team. Splitting the $8,000 first prize award are Rebeka Halbert, David Hudlow, Mark Madolora, Anish Raj Poudel, Yunesh Shakya, Aerina Shrestha and Chad Swenson.
