Electrical Engineering Chair Named at UT Arlington

Jun 12, 2009

University of Texas at Arlington Dean of Engineering Dr. Bill Carroll has announced the selection of Professor Jonathan Bredow to lead the college’s Electrical Engineering Department. Dr. Bredow has served as interim chair of the department since August 2008.

Dr. Bredow joined UT Arlington shortly after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1989. He also holds a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Iowa State University.

Dr. Bredow’s main area of research has been in microwave remote sensing of the environment, including the experimental determination of sources of microwave scattering from vegetation, sea ice and terrain. This knowledge supports the development of electromagnetic models that are important for remote sensing from space while also leading to sensing uses such as microwave imaging of objects through partitions and through soil layers, health monitoring of structural materials, and noncontact measurements of alcohol vapors from motor vehicle drivers. He has produced more than 100 journal and conference papers.

Dr. Bredow has been co-directing undergraduate laboratory development since 1999. For this, he secured equipment valued in excess of $1.2M. Partially due to his success in this area, Dr. Bredow received the College of Engineering’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2003. In addition, he has been collaborating with the Arlington Independent School District for more than five years in pre-engineering instruction to high school students.

Dr. Carroll commended the appointment of Dr. Bredow, saying “The Electrical Engineering Department faces many challenges, as does the College and the University, in our quests to achieve Tier-1 recognition and improve the diversity of our faculty, staff and student body. I know I can count on Jonathan for his contributions and collaborations in meeting these challenges.”
