COE Professor Receives Fulbright Scholar Grant

Sep 22, 2009

Dr. Pranesh B. Aswath, professor and associate chair of Materials Science & Engineering and professor Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and conduct research at the University of Trento in Italy during the spring of 2010. Professor Aswath, whose interests are in tribology (the study of friction and wear) and biomaterials, is one of approximately 1,100 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.

"It is an honor to be selected as a Fulbright Faculty Fellow to spend six months in University of Trento," said Dr. Aswath. "It is a tremendous opportunity to develop closer academic and research ties between UT Arlington and University of Trento."

The Fulbright Program, sponsored in the United States by the Department of State, has provided approximately 286,500 people – 108,160 Americans and 178,340 students, scholars and teachers from other countries – with the opportunity to observe each others’ political, economic, educational and cultural institutions, to exchange ideas and to embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare of the world's inhabitants. The Program operates in more than 155 countries worldwide.

The awards are named for the late U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas who, in 1945, introduced a bill in the United States Congress calling for the use of surplus war property to fund the "promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture, and science."
